As brewers from all over the U.S. flock to Denver this week to attend the Great American Beer Festival, many of them are taking advantage of their proximity to Colorado breweries and visiting them in between festival duties — but one local brewery is going a step further.
Austin Beerworks brewed a special beer, a Texas-Style Mango Berliner Weisse, with one of Colorado’s best beer makers, New Belgium Brewing, at the New Belgium facility yesterday. The tart brew incorporates flavors that we Texans especially love.
The beer, which will be finished with another brew day at Austin Beerworks next month, “has Southern heat from habaneros, along with bright acidity from New Belgium’s proprietary house lacto strain,” according to a press release. “It finishes slightly savory from Texas smoked sea salt and has a hint of mango juiciness.”
Now, that sounds downright delicious, doesn’t it?
The two breweries are teaming up as part of New Belgium’s Beers with Vrienden series — “Vrienden” meaning “friends” in Flemish. The idea behind the collaboration series is that the beers are made with “a mutual respect and appreciation of each other’s regional culinary and beer cultures,” New Belgium’s specialty brand manager, Andrew Emerton, said in the release.
Austin Beerworks, which is planning a big expansion that will allow the North Austin brewery a deeper footprint in Central Texas, saw the chance to team up as a no-brainer.
“A tour of New Belgium’s brewery in 2003 is what ultimately led to the creation of Austin Beerworks,” Austin Beerworks’ co-founder Michael Graham said in the release. “After witnessing their legendary company culture and drinking their amazing beers right at the source, it was very apparent that making beer is the world’s greatest job. We’re so honored and excited to return to where it all started for us and brew a beer with the people who inspired us.”
The New Belgium crew will make the trip to Austin in November for release parties, though details on those haven’t been finalized yet. Keep an eye on Austin Beerworks’ social media accounts for updates on the beer. It’ll be draft-only.
